At Thomas Sumter Academy, academic rigor meets creative exploration in a nurturing, Christian environment. Our curriculum balances academic learning with arts and athletics. A blend of traditional teaching methods with modern educational strategies promotes the development of well-rounded students. Small class sizes ensure children get the attention they deserve. Students receive instruction in core subject areas, as well as enrichment classes with specialized instructors in the areas of Bible, Computer, Creative Arts, Dance, Library, PE, and STEAM.

Preschool, PK3-K5

Our preschool program for early learners exists to meet children’s needs and stimulate learning in all developmental areas-physical, social, emotional, and intellectual. Interactions and activities are designed to develop children’s self-esteem and positive feelings toward learning in a nurturing Christian environment.

Faculty specialists enhance learning by providing our Preschool Generals with instruction in physical education, art, library, music, and STEAM classes.

Elementary School, 1st-3rd Grades

In Grades 1-3, students receive instruction in a self-contained classroom environment suitable for personalized learning. Our comprehensive literacy program lays a strong foundation in spelling, phonics, vocabulary, and writing, fostering an early love for literature. Hands-on learning makes math concepts come alive, promoting problem-solving skills through an interactive approach. Our youngest Generals enjoy integrated content studies. Science and Social Studies are blended with reading, enriched by weekly STEAM Lab experiments and field trips.

Elementary School, 4th-5th Grades

In Grades 4-5, students receive departmentalized instruction, switching between teachers for their core subjects. Students deepen comprehension and creative writing skills. Math mastery is fostered through a curriculum designed to challenge and expand mathematical thinking with practical applications. Students engage in Social Studies content through interactive lessons, projects, and trips. Scientific exploration is cultivated through studies of Physical, Earth, and Life Sciences, along with a focus on STEAM and Engineering. Our Fourth-Grade students complete the Junior American Citizens (JAC) program and enjoy a trip to Charleston, SC to cap off their Spring novel study. Fifth grade students finish their Lower School years strong with Generals Speak speeches, Science Fair, and the long-standing tradition of attending Camp Thunderbird in the Spring.
